Navona Square

Piazza Navona is another paradise island in the great Eternal City; a place where you can admire the marvellous work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. This is the site of the contest between the great masters of the Roman Baroque movement. Bernini produced the Fountain of the Four Rivers, and Borromini was responsible for constructing the Church of Saint Agnes in Agone. Just next to the Saint Agnes church is the Brazilian Embassy and the prestigious Palace of the Prince and Princess Pamphili. Piazza Navona is built over an old Roman circus of Domintian and only in mediaeval times was transformed into a square. Today Navona Square is one of the nicest meeting points for all international tourists flying to Rome from all over the world. This is a great place to enjoy a nice gelato like the Tartufo at the Tre Scalini, or a nice pizza in one of the many trattoria found in the area. Just next door you can also find the Caffè della Pace, another of the city’s historical cafés.  The Caffé dates back to the 18th century, and is well known for attracting a host of painters, carvers, musicians, writers and trendsetters.  Navona Square is within walking distance of the Pantheon and the Italian Senate, the Palazzo Madama, and the old university, La Sapienza, created by Bonifacio VIII in the 1300 and restored by Francesco Borromini in the 17th century.
